The ARTC NSW Protection Officer Level 2 course is designed for experienced rail workers who are ready to take on increased responsibility in the planning and implementation of rail protection. It extends upon the Level 1 role by authorising participants to oversee higher-risk worksites and coordinate more complex protection methods. The course focuses on ensuring safety through effective communication, risk management, and procedural compliance under the ARTC NSW Network Rules and Procedures.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Planning and implementing complex protection methods: Developing and applying protection plans for worksites with multiple crews, equipment, or rail movements.
  • Managing safeworking teams: Leading communication and coordination between protection staff, Network Control, and worksite supervisors.
  • Applying ARTC NSW Network Rules and Procedures: Interpreting and enforcing rules for higher-level track access and protection scenarios.
  • Conducting site risk assessments: Identifying, assessing, and managing risks associated with on-track work in complex environments.
  • Documenting and managing worksite protection records: Completing and maintaining required safeworking forms, logs, and authorities.
  • Responding to protection failures or incidents: Taking appropriate action in the event of worksite protection issues, including escalation procedures and reporting.

Learning Methods:

  • Classroom-based learning: Face-to-face instruction covering essential theoretical concepts and safety procedures.
  • Knowledge assessments: Written tests to evaluate participants' understanding of the course material.
  • In-field logbook: Participants complete tasks under the supervision of a qualified mentor, documenting their experiences and competencies in a logbook.
  • Practical observation assessments: Hands-on activities where participants demonstrate their skills in a controlled environment.
